Learn to fly with
Yellow Helicopters
Yellow Helicopters is the only helicopter flight school on the Isle of Man. With over 20 years of combined flight experience, our professional and highly experienced pilots can help any budding aviation enthusiast achieve their aerial dreams.
Whether it’s been a childhood ambition, a bucket list item, or perhaps you’re thinking about a possible career change, Yellow Helicopters offers flying lessons for a range of levels, starting from introduction trial lessons through to intensive sessions for those looking to achieve their Private Helicopter Pilot Licence (PPL (H)).
*Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, we are no longer able to provide full-time PPL training in the short term; if you wish to pursue your PPL, please get in touch with us to be added to our waiting list*
The training programme will combine hands-on helicopter training alongside Jonny and Will, our flight instructors, and classroom-based sessions.
You will get to pilot and ultimately fly our Robinson R44 helicopter, one of the most popular helicopters in the world.
On completion, a PPL (H) allows you to pilot a helicopter for personal use (not commercial). Not only will you get your pilot wings, but you and your passengers will have the freedom of the skies at your fingertips; see the Island and its breathtaking scenery from a whole new perspective, as well as exploring further afield and beyond our shores. Many PPL (H) qualified pilots use their certification to fly and land at off-airport landing heli-pads located at hotels and large golf resorts across the UK, Ireland and Europe. Enjoy a day out with a loved one, and treat yourselves to a round of golf, spot of lunch or a spa treatment at one of many hotels that have a heli-pad – and be back home in time for dinner! By the end of your training, you really will have the freedom to explore and tour.
*Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, we are no longer able to provide full-time PPL training for the time being; if you wish to pursue your PPL, please contact us to be on our waiting list*
For an individual with no other aviation experience, the minimum training requirement to obtain a PPL (H) is 45 hours. This must include at least:
- 25 hours of dual instruction
- 10 hours of supervised solo flight time.
Additionally, you are also required to pass:
- A UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Class 2 Medical
- Nine ground examinations
- A radiotelephony practical exam
- A PPL (H) skill test with a UK CAA Examiner.
If you have already gained your helicopter licence using another type of helicopter, with Yellow Helicopters you can add an R44 type rating to your licence certification.
Our type rating course is a minimum of five flying hours. Ground school is included, and a ground exam must be passed before taking the flight test. The ground exam can be sat in-house at Yellow Helicopters, and we have an on-site examiner to conduct the Licence Skills Test (LST).
Have the opportunity to get your hands on the controls and fly the helicopter yourself under the guidance of our experienced instructor with a Trial Lesson from as little as £395.
Kick-start your journey to becoming a pilot and register your interest for our flight training programme.
